Answer these questions in your own words. Support your answers with evidence from the audio recording.

01Based on the audio recording, why is there a need for a new approach like generative engine optimization (GEO)?
Sample answerBecause people are changing how they find information. They are using AI 'answer engines' more, which give direct answers, instead of traditional search engines with lists of links. The recording even mentions a prediction that traditional search traffic will drop significantly.
02How does the way large language models (LLMs) evaluate content differ from traditional search engines?
Sample answerTraditional search engines focus a lot on specific keywords and how many other sites link to the content. LLMs, on the other hand, care more about the actual meaning and context. They try to understand the relationships between ideas in the text, not just count how many times a keyword appears.
03According to the audio recording, why is generic, basic content unlikely to perform well in AI-driven search?
Sample answerIt won't do well because AI models can already generate basic information very easily. So, generic content doesn't offer any extra value. To get noticed by the AI, a brand needs to provide something unique, like expert opinions, original data, or a special perspective that the AI can't create by itself.
04What are the key actions a brand should take to build the 'undeniable credibility' needed for GEO?
Sample answerTo build credibility, a brand should focus on creating content based on original research and facts that can be checked. They should also be transparent about their methods and cite other expert sources. It's also important to update old content with new data to keep it accurate and trustworthy.

Grammar: Mixed conditionals

Grammar
Mixed conditionals combine elements from different conditional types. They are perfect for discussing hypothetical situations where the time of the condition is different from the time of the result, such as exploring how past tech decisions affect the present.
If companies had invested in AI research earlier, they would be leading the market now.
This common type mixes a past condition (if + past perfect) with a present result (would + verb).
If I wasn't so busy with my current projects, I would have attended that webinar on LLMs last week.
This type mixes a present or ongoing condition (if + past simple) with a past result (would have + past participle).
We wouldn't need to vet sources so carefully if the original training data had been more reliable.
Remember, the main clause can come first. No comma is needed when the 'if' clause is second.
  • Use 'if + past perfect' for a past condition and 'would + verb' for a present result.
  • Use 'if + past simple' for a present condition and 'would have + past participle' for a past result.

Beyond keywords: The human touch in an AI world

The rise of AI is changing how we create content for the internet.

Read the passage below, then answer the comprehension questions.

Many content creators feel they are facing a steep learning curve as AI changes the rules of online visibility. For years, the strategy was simple: find the right keywords. Now, that approach is losing its power. To gain traction today, creators must double down on what makes their work unique: human experience and authentic storytelling. Companies at the forefront of this shift understand that AI can't replicate genuine personality. If they hadn't realized this early, they would be struggling to connect with their audience now. Instead of trying to beat algorithms with technical tricks, they are building communities. They know that in a world saturated with AI-generated text, readers have to sift through endless generic content to find something that truly resonates. The brands that succeed will be the ones that offer a clear, human voice.

01What strategy for online visibility is becoming less effective, according to the passage?
Sample answerThe strategy of finding and using the right keywords is becoming less effective.
02What two qualities does the passage say creators should 'double down on'?
Sample answerThey should double down on human experience and authentic storytelling.
03Why does the author believe that a 'human voice' is more important now than before?
Sample answerBecause the internet is becoming saturated with generic, AI-generated content, and a human voice stands out and connects with readers in a way that AI cannot.
04According to the passage, what is the consequence for companies that did not adapt to this shift early on?
Sample answerThey would be struggling to connect with their audience now.
